Sleep disorders at sea: calming the nervous system — what if that were the key?

At sea, sleep quickly becomes a sensitive subject. You don’t sleep when you want. You sleep when you can.
Night watches, constant vigilance, weather, responsibilities, decisions…
And sometimes, once everything finally slows down, the body simply won’t let go.
Difficulty falling asleep, night awakenings, light sleep, chronic fatigue.Among professional seafarers, leisure sailors, and their families, sleep disorders at sea are common.
I have been sailing for more than 25 years.
A former professional sailor, now living aboard with my family, I know this reality from the inside.
Sleep is not a concept to me.
It is a living, fragile balance.

Sleep is not the problem — it is often the messenger
We often try to “fix” sleep with quick solutions.
But sleep is deeply connected to the state of the nervous system.
When the nervous system remains in alert mode:
the body doesn’t feel safe
the mind can’t slow down
emotions stay stored
sleep can’t settle
At sea, this hypervigilance is often necessary.
But when it becomes chronic, sleep suffers.
4 pathways to improve sleep at sea
Based on personal experience and lived teachings
👉 Take what resonates for you.
1. Understanding the link between the nervous system and sleep
Sleep depends less on physical fatigue than on nervous system regulation.
When the nervous system stays activated for too long, the body cannot let go.
Sleep issues are often a sign of protection, not failure.
Understanding this link is the starting point for any real change.
2. Mindfulness meditation: my onboard decompression chamber
Mindfulness meditation is part of my daily life on board.
Sometimes 20 minutes, sometimes longer, sometimes just a few breaths — depending on the day.
It helps me feel:
more grounded
more present
calmer
more rested
with deeper recovery
Meditation is not an escape. It is a way to tell the body: you are safe.
3. Understanding your energy through Human Design
Human Design, calculated from date, time and place of birth, offers deep insight into:
stress patterns
emotional sensitivity
decision-making
energetic functioning
This understanding became the foundation of my consultations.
4. Releasing emotional load (EFT & natural support)
EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is a tool I practice and teach on a daily basis.
It can help to:
soothe chronic stress,
release accumulated emotional load,
calm mental rumination,
relax the body.
On board, it is a particularly valuable tool:
discreet,
requiring no equipment,
usable even during night watches.
In addition, since last summer, we have been using doTERRA essential oils as a family, particularly their children/family kit, which we have fully integrated into life on board.
These synergies support:
the nervous system,
sleep,
intense emotions,
both adults and children.
I use them with discernment and can recommend them during consultations, according to each person’s individual needs.
